Join Sonia for an intensive one-day class in Istanbul at the historic Caferaga Medresesi. The class is designed to offer Turkish mosaicists as much information as possible in a concentrated format. Due to time limitations, the class will be primarily lecture and demonstration. It will be an information-rich session covering many aspects of mosaic art.

The first several hours will cover technical issues: different materials and their properties, various adhesives and a range of substrates. Then there will be a discussion/demonstration on a wide variety of tools with an intensive tutorial on cutting techniques, hammer and hardie, good ergonomics and safety. Participants may want to bring their own tools and some materials to cut for individual help on using their specific tools, improving cutting skills and making tricky cuts. As time permits, additional topics may include tips and tricks, opus, andamento, keystoning, hanging and framing, designing for mosaic, business of mosaic, developing your own style, finding your niche in mosaic and any number of other things based on the interests of participants. Bringing a lunch is suggested to allow additional time for questions during the lunch-break. There will be a handout with a class outline but bring a pad of paper and pen to take notes.

Mosaic artist Sonia King creates one-of-a-kind, contemporary mosaics for gallery, architectural, community and home settings. Her award-winning art is exhibited nationally and internationally and represented in private, public and corporate collections. She is a founding member and past President of the Society of American Mosaic Artists as well as vice president of the Associazione Internazionale Mosaicisti Contemporanei, based in Ravenna, Italy. Sonia teaches mosaic workshops around the world. She is the author of the bestselling book Mosaic Techniques and Traditions from Sterling Publishing.

Space is limited so early registration is recommended. Class cost is 275TL (Turkish Lira). Ten participants are required for the class to be held. The class will be taught in English. Class hours will be 10am - 4 pm, June 26, 2012 at Caferaga Medresesi (Aya Sofya Muzesi yani) Caferiye Sok. Sogukkuyu Cikmazi No: 1 Sultanahmet, Istanbul. Please arrive by 9:30 am to register and pay the class fee so we can start on time.
